Abstract
This study investigated pre-service English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers‘ experiences in using flashcards to teach procedural texts. Focusing on their perceptions, challenges, and successes, this qualitative study used a narrative inquiry approach, with data collected through semi- structured interviews with two pre-service teachers from UIN K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid Pekalongan. Findings indicated that the use of flashcards significantly enhanced students‘ learning experiences, triggered higher engagement and motivation, and facilitated better comprehension of procedural texts. Pre-service teachers reported positive experiences that included a tendency to innovate and make learning fun, happiness in seeing students enjoy and master the material, a sense of security due to effective and planned teaching strategies, and satisfaction with increased student activity and speaking ability. However, the implementation of flashcards also presented challenges. Negative experiences included students‘ reluctance who were passive or disliked English, teachers‘ unhappiness due to students‘ lack of confidence and monotonous methods, students‘ insecurity in speaking practice that required ongoing support, and dissatisfaction with the ―complicated‖, costly, and time-consuming flashcard-making process. Despite challenges in classroom preparation and management, the positive impact of flashcards on students‘ comprehension and enjoyment of learning is considered to far outweigh these obstacles. The study concludes that flashcards are a viable and effective tool in teaching EFL procedural texts, while highlighting the importance of ongoing support and training for pre-service teachers to optimize their use.
