Abstract

Translation plays an important role in language learning, especially for EFL students, as it helps develop both linguistic and cultural understanding. This study explores the translation procedures used by EFL students when translating English news articles into Indonesian. It aims to identify the types of procedures applied and the reasons behind their choices. Using a descriptive qualitative case study design, the research involved six EFL students enrolled in a translation course. Data were gathered from their translated texts and semistructured interviews. The results showed that students used a range of translation procedures, including cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, naturalization, transliteration, couplets, synonymy, shift, through-translation, and compensation. Cultural equivalent was the most frequently used translation procedure in this study. This is because the students were aware of the importance of cultural awareness and adaptation in order to create proper translation product. Overall, the study suggests that EFL students can apply appropriate translation procedures to convey meaning clearly and effectively across languages and cultures.
