Abstract

This research explores students’ feelings when using American comics to learn English vocabulary and the strategies they used when using American comics for vocabulary learning. This research used a qualitative approach with a narrative inquiry method, with five students from two universities in Pekalongan who were interested in reading American comics selected as participants. The data were collected through semi-structured interview and documentation. The findings showed that students experienced positive feelings such as excitement, enjoyment, happiness, and satisfaction when learning vocabulary through American comics, which encouraged their engagement and learning motivation. However, negative feelings such as confusion, difficulty, and boredom were also found, which could hinder the learning process. In addition, students used various vocabulary learning strategies, including discovery strategies (social and determination) and consolidation strategies (cognitive, memory, and social), to acquire and retain new vocabulary encountered in the comics.
