Abstract

Research on QuillBot has largely focused on its use in supporting academic writing, while students’ emotional experiences during the writing process have not yet been extensively explored. Therefore, this study aims to explore students’ emotional when using QuillBot for academic writing. This study employed a qualitative research design using the Photovoice method and the data were analyzed thematically. The participants were three English Education students who had taken academic writing courses and actively used QuillBot in producing English academic papers, including essays, journal articles, and undergraduate thesis at an Islamic university in Pekalongan, Central Java. The findings revealed that participants experienced both positive and negative emotions throughout the academic writing process while using QuillBot. Positive emotions included enjoyment, hope, pride, gratitude, and joy. These emotions encouraged students to remain engaged in the writing process, particularly when they felt that their efforts gradually led to meaningful progress in completing their academic writing. Meanwhile negative emotions included frustration, anger, anxiety, boredom, and hopelessness. These emotions emerged when students encountered repeated revisions, concerns about the originality of AI-assisted writing, and difficulties in expressing their ideas. This study indicates that students experienced various positive and negative emotions throughout the academic writing process while using QuillBot, which highlights the emotional dimension of AI-assisted academic writing.
