Abstract

Although independent use of YouTube has been shown to enhance learner autonomy and motivation, understanding of how EFL students actually manage their self-regulated learning (SRL) during extensive listening in an open digital ecosystem like YouTube remains limited. This study aims to explore how EFL students manage their SRL during independent extensive listening activities through various YouTube channels. A qualitative case study design was employed, with data collected through listening logs and semi-structured interviews. The participants involved in this study were three female English education students who had taken an extensive listening course at one campus in Pekalongan, Central Java. The results showed that students successfully managed their self-regulation across three continuous phases by Zimmerman. In terms of goal-setting and material selection, students entered their sessions with different motivations, ranging from seeking emotional comfort to mastering specific accents, and these motivations directly shaped their content choices. In terms of strategy use and comprehension monitoring, they actively managed various audio challenges by applying strategies such as using subtitles, selective replays, shadowing, and adjusting playback speed. In terms of self-evaluation and learning adaptation, they judged their success based on personal internal standards and made concrete decisions to improve their future sessions. This study suggests that independent extensive listening through YouTube channels has great potential to foster learner autonomy through structured self-monitoring habits among EFL learners.
