Abstract

Vocabulary mastery plays an important role in English language learning because it supports students’ ability to listen, speak, read, and write. However, many junior high school students still experience difficulties in understanding and using English vocabulary. This study aimed to describe the implementation of the Word Search Game as a media for teaching English vocabulary and to identify the challenges faced by teachers as well as the strategies used to overcome them. This research employed a qualitative case study design. The participants were an English teacher and eighth-grade students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah NU Buaran. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using the interactive model of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that the implementation of the Word Search Game was carried out through structured learning stages, including introductory, main, and closing activities. The game created a more active, interactive, and enjoyable learning environment and encouraged students to participate more actively in vocabulary learning. The main challenges found were students’ limited vocabulary mastery and difficulties in finding English equivalents of Indonesian words and constructing simple sentences. To address these challenges, the teacher applied several strategies, such as providing examples through a projector, organizing students into small groups, and giving guidance and feedback throughout the learning process. The study concludes that the Word Search Game is an effective learning media that supports vocabulary learning and increases student engagement in English classes.
