Abstract

ABSTRAK Extensive reading adalah kegiatan membaca yang dilakukan secara luas dan terus-menerus, tanpa terlalu fokus pada detail atau pemahaman mendalam. Extensive reading bertujuan untuk mendorong minat membaca siswa untuk membaca lebih banyak buku. Karena konsep dari extensive reading adalah siswa dapat memilih bacaan sesuai dengan minat mereka. Penelitian ini meneliti strategi pembelajaran yang diterapkan oleh siswa dalam aktivitas extensive reading. Menurut Keatley and Kennedy ada beberapa strategi membaca yang dapat diterapkan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan wawancara terbuka dan observasi sebagai media pengumpulan data. Dalam menganalisis data, penelitian ini menggunakan teori Braun dan Clarke. Data diperoleh dari enam orang mahasiswa dan satu dosen pengampu mata kuliah extensive reading. Enam mahasiswa dipilih dengan kualifikasi melakukan aktivitas extensive reading dalam bahasa inggris dan menggunakan metode pemahaman membaca ketika melakukan aktivitas extensive reading. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa menggunakan tiga dari empat strategi pemahaman membaca yang ada. Ketiga strategi tersebut adalah prediction, guessing from context, dan paraphrasing. Dalam menerapkan extensive reading, partisipan mengalami beberapa kendala. Ada 2 kendala yang dihadapi yaitu language background of the students dan lack of interest in reading. Kata Kunci: Extensive reading, strategi pembelajaran membaca extensive, kendala membaca extensive ABSTRACT Extensive reading is a reading activity carried out widely and continuously without focusing too much on details or deep understanding. Extensive reading aims to encourage students' interest in reading to read more books. Because the concept of extensive reading is that students can choose reading according to their interests, this research examines the learning strategies applied by students in extensive reading activities. According to Keatley and Kennedy, several reading strategies can apply. This research used qualitative methods with open interviews and observation as data collection media. In analyzing the data, this research uses Braun and Clarke's theory. Data was obtained from six students and one lecturer teaching extensive reading courses. Six students were selected with the qualifications to carry out extensive reading activities in English and use reading comprehension methods when carrying out extensive reading activities. This research shows that students used three existing reading comprehension strategies. The three strategies are prediction, guessing from context, and paraphrasing. In implementing extensive reading, participants experienced several obstacles. Students faced two obstacles, namely the students' language background and lack of interest in reading.
