Abstract
This study explores students’ experiences in translating journal articles using the free translation method, focusing on the positive and negative experiences during the process translating. Using a Photovoice approach, participants documented their translation experiences through photos and personal narratives. The findings reveal that students commonly used rereading strategies, revised machine translation outputs critically, and developed focus techniques to support their concentration. Despite these positive experiences, they also faced negative experiences with academic vocabulary, complex sentence structures, and the limitations of machine translation tools. These experiences suggest that the free translation method encourages flexibility and creativity but also demands strong critical thinking and language awareness. The study highlights the need for translation training that addresses both cognitive and technical aspects of academic translation.
