Abstract

This study investigates how anxiety is manifested in EFL students during academic speaking performances and the factors that contribute to it. Using a qualitative case study design, the research involved four fifth-semester students from the English Education Department at a university in Pekalongan. Data were collected through classroom observations using video recordings and semi-structured interviews and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that students experienced various manifestations of anxiety during academic speaking performances, including physiological, behavioral, and verbal expressions. The physiological and behavioral manifestations included rapid heartbeat, trembling hands, and fidgeting, while the verbal manifestations included speaking disruption, mental blocking, and repetition or overexplaining during presentations. Furthermore, three main factors contributed to students’ anxiety: linguistic difficulties, fear of negative evaluation, and peer interaction. Limited vocabulary, concerns about grammar and pronunciation, lecturer evaluation, and classmates’ attention intensified students’ nervousness during speaking tasks. The study concludes that anxiety in academic speaking performances is influenced by both internal linguistic limitations and external classroom-related social pressures. These findings highlight the importance of creating supportive classroom environments and encouraging adequate preparation to help reduce students’ anxiety during academic speaking activities.
