Abstract

The development of the digital gig economy ecosystem has provided more opportunities for freelance illustrators to handle international clients independently through the assistance of intelligent translation tools such as DeepL Translator. This study aims to explore the experiences of freelance illustrators in using DeepL Translator to facilitate professional communication and develop their English for Specific Purposes (ESP) vocabulary. This research used a qualitative method with a case study design. The research participants consisted of three freelance illustrators actively operating on global platforms and routinely handling orders from international clients. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and chat log documentation, then analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña's model, while Holec's Learner Autonomy framework and Schmitt's Vocabulary Learning Strategies were utilized as analytical lenses. The results showed that the participants autonomously exercised full control over their business communication processes and vocabulary acquisition. Generally, they were able to use the tool to decode complex visual instructions, dynamically adjust pre-editing and post-editing methods according to message formality, and secure grammatical accuracy to maintain business credibility. Furthermore, they successfully utilized the interactive synonym feature to discover specific design-related terms, which were then effectively retained through active note-taking or repetitive application within actual workflows. Although the participants lacked formal English education, they perceived DeepL Translator as a highly beneficial adaptive scaffolding tool to bridge language barriers and mitigate communicative anxiety. Overall, the findings indicate that the use of DeepL Translator effectively facilitates the achievement of successful communication and supports independent ESP vocabulary learning, thereby ensuring their career and financial sustainability in the global market.
