Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates how young adults experience acquiring new vocabulary through Character.AI. This research employed a qualitative design involving three participants, with data collected through semi-structured interviews and Character.AI chat records. The findings were discussed using Kolb’s (2014) Experiential Learning Theory, which consists of four stages: Concrete Experience, Reflective Observation, Abstract Conceptualization, and Active Experimentation. The findings show that participants encountered unfamiliar vocabulary through conversations with AI characters, reflected on word meanings and their relevance to different contexts, developed their understanding by consulting online resources and examining grammatical structures, and applied new vocabulary in subsequent conversations, everyday communication, and academic writing. Participants’ experiences illustrate how interactions with Character.AI corresponded to the four stages of experiential learning. Overall, Character.AI provided an interactive and contextual environment in which young adults could encounter, understand, and practice new vocabulary.
